Teresita Ssen Marquez, more popularly known as Wynwyn Marquez, was the first Filipina to join and win the Reina Hispoamericana beauty pageant. As the reigning Reina, Winwyn was invited to headline the Boulevard Carnaval in Santa Cruz dela Sierra, Bolivia on January 14. Unfortunately, the beauty queen had to skip the show and head home to the Philippines.
In an Instagram post, Winwyn explained why she had to pass on the opportunity to become the first Filipina to grace the Boulevard Carnaval.
“Due to the bad weather yesterday the Boulevard Carnaval was moved today pero hindi na po ako makakasali dahil naka schedule ang 3 connecting flights ko ngayon na umaabot ng 3 days ang byahe and mahirap na i-rebook dahil sa oras kaya kinakailangan na makauwi today plus meron din hinahabol na work sa Pilipinas. kaya nag decide din kami ng RHA na umuwi nadin ako para makasiguro ako sa flight. isa toh sa mga susuotin ko for the show and may 3 pang napaka gaganda na damit ng carnaval..pero hindi ko na maipapakita 🙁 it’s sad but nag papa salamat padin ako sa sa week na toh kahit ang daming nangyari may purpose din bakit nangyari toh diba.. See you soon Manila.”
Winwyn Marquez is the daughter of actor Joey Marquez and Alma Moreno. She is the current reigning Reina Hispoamericana, having been crowned in 2017. Out of 26 other beauties, Winwyn was able to convince the judges that she was highly capable of representing Hispanic heritage and culture. When asked during the question and answer portion how she would promote Hispanic-American culture given the language barrier, Wynwyn said that language can be learned, but the will and determination to contribute to the organization cannot. She added that kindness which comes from the heart is a universal language that everyone understands. She ended her answer by saying that Hispanic culture is more than just about language, but about love for God, love for country, love for history, and love for family.
The Boulevard Carnaval is the longest runway in Bolivia and is the first of a long list of ‘carnavals’ for the country this year.
